I am thinking of buying a Jacob & Co watch but am put off by the quartz movement they have!
Does anyone know if Rolex converts, for example, the sea-dweller so that it has a diamond bezel?? If so I will have it done to mine. I cant even find an email address for Rolex to ask them.
Also..I have emailed Jacob and Co about the model I like and it seems that I can save a staggering £3000 from buying it in the states (from Jacob) than purchasing it from Harrods!!
Thanks,
Nathan.

Nathan,
I am also interested in buying a Jacob & Co watch. To be honest, i'm not an an expert about mechanisms but is the one on jacob not very good compared to other watches? In your opinion, who does the best mechanisms as I want to buy a watch that has great looks with a decent mechanism, is jacob the best compromise do you think? The diamond bezel looks superb.
The other watch I am considering is a Rolex Daytona stainless steel white face but a friend has told me that I should consider the zenith elprimero grande chronomaster. So confused!!! Any views on these watches?

Hi Gaj!
I'm no expert but the quartz movement uses a battery to power the watch whereas an automatic uses Kinetic Energy (your wrist movement) to power it. (I think?)
Therefore, the automatic's are a 100% mechanical mechanism and are an Engineering work of art. Some manufactures design there own quartz movements which I feel isn't too bad but generally, quartz movements are alot cheaper and do not hold there value aswell as the auto's.
I also think that the sweeping second hand that automatics have is a lot more pleasing to the eye as for the tick-tick motion the battery opertaed ones entale.
Im still not sure what to do however, it is still going to take me a while to save up for either!!
If I had the money like the celebs who wear Jacob do, then I wouldn't batter an eye-lid to buying one. £6600 is alot of money for me to be thinking of spending on a (FASHION WATCH) rather than a collectors watch!
I have a Rolex Yachtmaster now (platinum bezel one) and have just had my Sea-dweller serviced which has come back like a new watch! Well worth £200!!
If I do buy a Jacob then I will sell my Sea-dweller..know anyone who wants to buy one??
Also check out..if you haven't already..the Jacob website:
http://www.jacobandco.com/
I must admit that I cannot go to Harrods without looking and trying one on!!..they must think i'm gonna steal one!!..actually....

Nathan,
Even Jacob & co's webpage is as cool as their watches. The more I look at one, the more I want one. But as I said, the dilemna of deciding to go for a fashion vs mechanism is tearing me apart. If jacob & co had an automatic mechanism, I don't think I would consider any other watch. I'm not sure how old you are, (myself being in the mid twenties) but I think the jacob looks very hip (and not to mention bling bling) which is what makes it look so special and suits the younger person, wher as the good mechanism watches look very conservative (and rather boring, if I say so) and look better on older people (hope I'm not offending the elder viewers on the forum). Even a rolex with a diamond bezel still would not touch the jacob in looks.
How about we write a letter to jacob and ask them to put an auto machanism? I'll write the letter, and I'll let you pay, sounds fair!!!! I guess the aliternative would be to have 2 watches; one fashion and one mechanism, unless you know of any other watches that combine the two.
Will you be selling the yatch master aswell if you decide to go for the jacob? Do u honestly think residuals on the jacob will be crap? What is your view on the rolex daytona, is it worth paying the premium on it, as it is probably comparable in price with the jacob?
I guess I'll be seeing you at harrods with our shotguns!!!!! (I'm definitely joking, for the sake of the other viewers)

Hey!
Well...dilema, dilema!!
I'm 24 yrs old by the way so probably the same age as yourself?
I've been down the same line as the #### website but the thing that puts me off is, that on the Jacob website, it states that the watches warantee is not valid unless brought from a registered dealer!!
If you look on the site you can see the list of UK dealers and, unfortuantely ##### are not, however Harrods and a few others are.
I can't see the prices varying between UK registered dealers. Can you??
I could never sell the Yacht-master...absotutely love it..the best watch i've had by far!! At least I have that if I decide to buy the bling-bling (let's be fare..you couldn't wear the Jacob on all occassions not matter how much you would like to!)
I spoke to someone in Harrods who worked in the Patek Phillipe room and spoke about why Patek's are so expensive and also about the Jacob. He was the guy who said that a Jacob's value would depreciate badly but..hey..how many Jacob's have you seen second-hand??
Myself..zero!!
However, I have felt like knocking on P-Diddy's house down in SW10 and asking if he wants to sell his, CHEAP, to a poor student!!
The Rolex Daytona...looks like a nice watch but the asking price being twice as much as the RRP price....? No way!!!
The watch is only stainless steel, and the reason for the steep price tag is beacuse of the waiting list?..sorry but I really dont see the sense in that. Sorry to anyone who has one reading this!!
Al least you are getting 3.25 k worth of diamonds with the Jacob...surely thats an investment?? Ohh..and the reason for using the quartz movement on the Jacob is because the five time zones all gained or lost when using an auto movement..so the Jacob guy said!
Im sure we will think of an answer someday..getting the money for me is harder!..however the Jacobs do an intrest free option in Harrods..ummm..tempting hey??

What!!!!!! You're a student with a yatch master, sea dweller and now considering buying a jacobs. Bling bling to that!!!! So what watch will you buy when you start working?
Its all good bro! (I'm 25 by the way)
Thanks for pointing out that if jacobs not purchased at an official dealer, warranty not covered, may explain why there is huge saving.
You're absolutely spot on about the daytona, not worth paying that much premium, although in my opinion, has to be one of the best looking rolexes I've seen.
If i was you (and had the money of course), go for the jacob, as you've already got a watch with a good mechanism. Just think, would you ever think about purchasing a jacob when you hit forty or something? I don't think so. It's all about those diamonds my friend. To be honest, now, I'm not too bothered that the jacobs doesn't have an automatic mechanism because if you're really into getting the best mechasnism, you would be considering other brands anyway. Jacobs is a dress watch, more like a piece of jewellery, which is one of the best fashion accessories I've seen to date. (I reckon I should get a job at Harrods behind the Jacobs counter, altough I'm sure a few items would accidently go missing). The only thing that bothers me is the residual value, which I feel is difficult to comment since jacobs being such a new make.
I'm still deciding what to do but I think I might just take the plunge and get the jacob. I can always buy a rolex (or other good mechamism watches later in life when I'm not too bothered about looks, if that ever happens!) whereas the best time in buying such a flamboyant watch is now!
Keep me posted what you decide to do. (I'll buy one if you buy one!)

To Nathan & Gai,
Was reading your emails and felt that I had to offer some advice! Several of my friends have purchased a Jacob & Co watch - and I have to say the watch, unless it is on David Beckhams wrist, looks fake. It may look okay In addition the watch is really only a fashion itiem without any real heritage or name. The main problems with trends and fashion is that it goes out of date very quickly! I myself have several watches including 2 Breitling, 2 Rolex (Submariner & new Stainless Steel & Gold Daytona) and a Blue Face Tag Monaco. I must admit that being only 32 years of age, I am still partial to the odd bit of bling. My advice if your looking for a great looking watch with the bit of style whilst retaining the heritage would be buy a Stainlees Steel & Gold Daytona - the one I recently purchased looks fantastic and having seen my far share of fakes looks nothing but pure class. Or as an alternative try a Breitling - also the Tag Monaco - all my watches look great with a suit. The Jacob & Co does not wear well with a suit - looks like the individual is trying too hard. Anyway its only my opinon - just wouldn't want you buying something that you may regret later on. If you buy something like the Rolex - they tend to be timless and never lose their looks or style.
All the best John Rushbrook
